One fatally shot after argument in Reading

Reading police investigating homicide

READING, Pa. - One man was shot to death in Reading early Sunday morning, police said.

It happened around 3 a.m. in the 1300 block of Mulberry Street.

Maximino Cruz Jr. was killed, police said.

Cruz, 36, of North 8th Street in Reading, was visiting someone in the 1300 block of Mulberry Street, and when he left the house he was visiting, he got into a verbal altercation with two people, police said.

Cruz then left the scene in a vehicle, according to police.

A little while later, police said Cruz returned to the 1300 block of Mulberry Street and encountered the same two people he'd argued with earlier.

Neighbors then reported hearing several gunshots, police said. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Cruz in a breezeway between two row homes in the block.

Cruz died of a gunshot wound to the torso, the coroner said.

Police have not made any arrests in the killing.

In 2006, Cruz was convicted on several counts of assault and harassment.  He also pleaded guilty to assault in 2002.  Both incidents happened in Berks County.

Cruz's father, Maximino Cruz, died in 2011 after being rescued from a burning home by firefighters.  Cruz, who was 58, died from complications from smoke inhalation and burns.

69 News reached out to the Cruz family, but they declined to comment on the situation.
