Pagoda in Reading needs thousands of dollars worth of repairs

Century-old historic landmark is deteriorating in parts

READING, Pa. - A historic landmark in Berks County could be in trouble.

The century-old Pagoda, which overlooks Reading, is deteriorating in parts, officials said.

"It's in need of immediate repair," said city Councilwoman Marcia Goodman-Hinnershitz.

Goodman-Hinnershitz told 69 News that a wall near the base of the Pagoda is eroding. The area is currently blocked off by a fence.

"Basically, the stones are tumbling down the side of the mountain," she said.

It's reportedly been years since city officials learned of the needed maintenance, and now many hope to develop an action plan.

Goodman-Hinnershitz said council members are in a discussion phase, working to determine exactly how much repairs would cost.

An early estimate was $250,000, but Goodman-Hinnershitz told 69 News there hasn't been a quote yet.

In any case, funding the repairs is a concern. She hopes to attract private interest.

"This is something we as county residents [and] city residents need to commit ourselves to… to make sure this building stands another 100 years on top of Mount Penn."

On Wednesday, Pagoda visitors agreed.

"I hope they would repair it," said Jennifer Turk. "It's beautiful."

"We love to spend time here," said Manjeet Singh.
