Couple charged in theft of 90-100 car batteries from Walmart

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - Two people have been charged in the theft of as many as 100 car batteries from a Walmart store in Berks County.

Angelita Gonzalez and her boyfriend, William Becker, broke into a secured area at the rear of the store on the Allentown Pike in Muhlenberg Township on September 5, 2016, according to court documents released Wednesday.

Police said surveillance video shows the suspects loading between 90 and 100 batteries into the rear of a U-Haul rental van, which matched the description of a van used in a similar theft at the Walmart in Tilden Township, near Hamburg, on the same day.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the van was reported stolen after Becker rented it from a U-Haul facility near his home in Philadelphia on July 14 and failed to return it, police said.

Gonzalez and Becker were each charged with burglary, conspiracy, theft by unlawful taking, and criminal mischief in connection with the Muhlenberg theft. No charges have been filed in the theft near Hamburg.

Gonzalez was committed to the Berks County Jail on $25,000 bail; Becker is already behind bars in Lancaster County on unrelated charges.
