Pair charged with murder in fatal beating of man in Reading

Elree Williams still being sought by police

READING, Pa. - One man is in custody and another is being sought in the fatal beating of a man on Penn Street in Reading.

Authorities on Thursday announced murder charges against Darriel Everett and Elree Williams, both of Reading.

The two men stand accused of beating a man in the 900 block of Penn Street early on the morning of November 19, 2016. The victim, identified as Jose Rafael Valentin, died three days later of head injuries he suffered in the attack, according to court documents.

Surveillance video, police said, showed Valentin, 42, leaving a bar and walking west on Penn Street before being physically assaulted by three men, the third of whom hasn't been identified.

Everett, 48, is behind bars at SCI Graterford in Montgomery County on an unrelated case; Williams, 36, is still at large.

In addition to second- and third-degree murder, both men are facing charges of conspiracy, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, and theft by unlawful taking.
