Driver charged in crash that killed farmer due in court

AMITY TWP., Pa. - A woman charged in a crash that killed the owner of his family's orchard in Berks County last month is due in court for her preliminary hearing this week.

Pamela Routhier had a blood alcohol level of 0.164% -- more than twice the legal limit -- when she struck Daniel Shirey while driving along the 1500 block of Old Swede Road -- also designated as Route 662 -- in Amity Township on the afternoon of Aug. 23, according to court documents.

Shirey, 84, was fixing a fence on his family's orchard at the time he was hit, police said. He was rushed to a hospital, but he died two days later.

Routhier, 51, of Muhlenberg Township, was charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person.

Routhier, free on $50,000 unsecured bail, is due to appear before a judge Wednesday for her preliminary hearing on the charges.
