Parents, students rally to keep Richmond Elementary open

RICHMOND TWP., Pa. - Some parents in Richmond Township are rallying to keep their kids' elementary school open.

The Fleetwood Area School District is facing a deficit of more than $1 million, and to close the gap, it's considering closing Richmond Elementary.

Richmond students had a pep rally Tuesday to celebrate their school spirit. It's something their parents and principal want to see continue into the future. Kindergarten through 4th grade students shared what was special about their school.

"I like recess," said one student.

"It's been three years since I've been in this school, and I actually like this school," said another student. "I love the teachers. Teachers are nice. That's all I have to say."

As students shouted, "Richmond rocks, Richmond rocks," it was obvious the kids love their school.

The school principal asked our cameras not be in the room when teachers explained to the students that the school could be closing.

"We need to prepare the children for what could happen and explain to them that it isn't an easy decision," said Michelle Jackson, the school's principal.

Jackson said she understands the Fleetwood Area School Board has a tough decision ahead.

"With the cuts that we're facing, it's really hard to to cut anything else," said Jackson.

But she hoped the school board recognizes what is special about the school, like how it was just recognized by the state for its PSSA scores.

Parents who were at the pep rally during the school day don't want to see their kids lose the small school community feeling.

"It's not what we want for our kids," said Cathy Bower, parent. "We all moved to this area to give our children a better life, small schools, great schools."

And they want the school board to take notice.

"We don't want them just thinking well money, money, money," said Bower. "It's not all about the money. It's about the kids."

Parents planned to attend Tuesday's school board meeting to hold a rally beforehand and to speak during it.
