Parents terrified by reported abduction of girl in Reading

READING, Pa. - Parents with children who attend 10th and Green Elementary School in Reading reacted Wednesday to news that an 8-year-old girl was reportedly abducted while walking to school around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

"That is horrible," said Jessenia Gomez.

"They got a lot of heart to do that in broad daylight," said Luis Romero.

Police said the girl was walking in the 600 block of Mulberry Street when a Latino man, around 6 feet tall with a well-trimmed beard and black hair, grabbed her and shoved her into a small black car and drove off.

Police said believe they drove past Reading High School to a home in the northeast section of the city.

After an unknown amount of time, they said the man put her back into the vehicle and dropped her off near 10th and Robeson streets. Thankfully, the girl was able to find her way home and report the abduction.

"I was in shock because I had no idea and then, it is my kid's school. It freaks me out," said Ermalinda Rios.

"I come every day to pick up my son, so I would not let anything happen to him. That is really sad to know that that happened to a child," said Gomez.

Some parents said they walk their children to school every day.

"I walk my kids to school and I pick them up. I do not take any chances," said Rios.

Others said incident will make them change their ways.

"After that, I cannot let them walk no more. I am so nervous and scared now," said Romero.

Police are still trying to find out if the little girl was assaulted. If you saw anything Monday morning, call Reading police.
