Pa. state-owned schools see 3 percent tuition jump

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Students at Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities will see tuition increase by about 3 percent in the coming school year.

The board of the State System of Higher Education voted Tuesday to boost tuition by $99 a semester, to $3,410.

That's the cost for full-time students who are Pennsylvania residents, a group that includes the vast majority of the system's 112,000 students.

"PASSHE universities offer tremendous value to students and their families, providing a unique combination of high-quality educational opportunities and the most affordable cost available," said Guido M. Pichini, a Wyomissing, Berks County, resident who chairs the board of governors.

The system, which includes East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Millersville and West Chester universities, is currently experimenting at some schools with flexible pricing plans and will evaluate their effectiveness after two years.

The board also voted to extend the contracts of 10 university presidents for three more years.

At the four other schools, the presidents are currently serving on an acting or interim basis.

The board also voted Tuesday to re-elect Pichini to a fourth consecutive term as its chairman.

Pichini, a 1974 graduate of Kutztown University, is president of WSK and Associates Consulting Group and its subsidiaries.
