People near creeks, streams keeping close eye on water level

RICHMOND TWP., Pa. - 20736998

The rain was relentless in parts of Berks County on Monday with another day of gray skies and soggy conditions.

Mother nature hammered the area the past couple days, and she's not done yet.

In Maidencreek Township, windshield wipers were going full speed. Scenes like that have played out across the region for days.

On Sunday, heavy rains turned roads into rivers, and drainage ditches were overloaded in Richmond Township.

Brittany Specht snapped photos outside her home at Pleasant Hill and Park roads.

"It was horrible actually, the worst I ever actually seen it," said Specht.

"The cars would come down from Fleetwood to the intersection and they would stop right in their tracks. The water would just stop them," said Patricia Specht, who tried to dry out her plants from all the water.

The water receded some, but frustration flooded over. Torrential rain caused the creek outside Deanna Brunner's house to overflow and left her yard under water.

"My husband keeps calling because he goes to work. 'Did you check the cellar? Did you check the cellar?' because he has to come home quick and start the pump," said Brunner, who has dealt with the flooding for years.

Brunner is not out of the woods yet. She hoped for a break, but mother nature did not seem to listen.

"Every time it starts raining I say, 'Please stop. Please stop.'"

Berks County is under a flash flood watch until Tuesday evening.
