Person killed in crash involving stolen car, dump truck

State police unable to identify victim

DISTRICT TWP., Pa. - Circumstances surrounding a fatal crash in Berks County aren't making it easy for authorities to identify the person who died.

The car involved in the crash with a dump truck in District Township was reported Wednesday morning as having been stolen from Shillington, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

"Now we have to try to identify the person in the car, which is a little more difficult now because it's not the person who owned the car," said PSP Trooper David Beohm, a public information officer for Reading-based Troop L.

The Honda Civic's owner told 69 News that he was at work when he learned of the crash and doesn't know who would have taken the car.

The accident was reported shortly before 7 a.m. in the 900 block of Huff Church Road, near Cherry Drive, in District Township, near the Bear Creek Mountain Resort.

The Civic was traveling east on Huff Church when it crossed into the path of the oncoming truck.

The driver of the car died at the scene, but the coroner couldn't remove the victim from the wreckage without the help of two large wreckers.

"They actually had to lift the dump truck off the Honda and pull the Honda out," Beohm said.

The driver of the truck, a 51-year-old Leesport man, was not injured, police said.

Huff's Church Road was closed for more than four hours.
