Plan would speed up widening of Route 222

The Berks County Commissioners are considering a plan that could speed up the process of widening Route 222 to the Lehigh County line.

At Thursday's budget meeting, an engineering firm suggested that the county pay for the preliminary engineering of the last phase of PennDOT's plans to widen 222.

The firm says by doing that the county could possibly trim two to three years off the length of the project.

County planners say the project is tentatively scheduled to begin in the next several years.
