Poinsettia business 'poppin'' for local flower shops

Poinsettia business 'poppin'' for...

READING, Pa. - A plant with tropical roots has become a holiday staple. Right now, the poinsettia is a staple of business for Lebanon-based Royer's Flowers and Gifts.

"We also send a lot to nursing homes, and a lot of people will choose to send them to home delivery as Christmas presents," said Erica Bixby, who works at the Lebanon location.

Bixby said the traditional red is, of course, the most popular. Next, is the all-white poinsettia. The stores also sell loads of their mixed-color collections. Altogether, Royer's will ship out more than 20,000 of them.

"We grow some of our poinsettias in greenhouses in Lancaster County, and then we ship them to our central locations then out to all of our stores," Bixby said.

From Lebanon to the store in Reading, Royer's North Fifth Street location gets about 800 poinsettias, and they said business has been great.

"Oh yes, Christmas is always a busy time for us," said Reading store manager Amy Michalski. "We're very happy that the phones are ringing and people are placing their orders for their Christmas holiday and getting ready for the season."

Michalski said even though the Christmas rush never gets easier, she's grateful for it.

"It's always hectic. It's always a good time of year. It just a busy-- keeps going, this is always popping."
