Police: Berks business leader's death a sobering reminder of dangers of on-street jogging

Deadly accident

PIKE TWP., Pa. - Joggers are taking notice after a well-known Berks County business leader was killed on her morning run. Police said it's a sobering reminder that runners need to take extra precautions on narrow rural roads.

Sally Miksiewicz was the CEO of her family-owned company, East Penn Manufacturing, one of Berks County's largest employers.

"She was a really good person to me, and I looked up to her," said longtime friend Lois DeLong. "We were good friends."

The accident happened on Boyer Road in Pike Township, a remote and heavily wooded stretch of road near Miksiewicz's home. Neighbors said the sun can blind drivers along the curve where Miksiewicz was killed.

"It's a dangerous spot right here, and I guess he wasn't paying attention," said neighbor Bob Boyle.

State police are still deciding whether to charge the driver, Mark Miller, 56, of Richmond Township. A patrol supervisor said Saturday that a decision won't come until at least Monday.

"It's rare I even see a car, but every once in awhile that I do, a lot of them do kind of fly through here because they think no one else is using it," said bicyclist Anthony Mell.

A state police spokesman said those running along roadways should always face oncoming traffic, wear brightly-colored clothes, and never wear headphones.

"[Miksiewicz] usually stayed along the side of the road and was pretty careful what she was doing," said Boyle. "I don't think I ever saw her wearing headphones or anything while she was running."
