Police cite wrong-way driver in messy crash on Route 222

Overturned truck spilled load of trash on highway

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - The driver of a car that traveled several miles in the wrong direction on Route 222, causing a tractor trailer to veer out of her way and roll onto its side, has been cited by police.

Christine Hockenberry, 49, has received three traffic citations for her role in the mishap in Muhlenberg Township on the afternoon of October 24, police announced Tuesday.

Hockenberry got onto the highway at one of the interchanges in Spring Township and traveled north in the southbound lanes, prompting several other motorists to call 911, police said.

As Hockenberry approached Route 61, the driver of an oncoming tractor trailer was forced to serve out of her way to avoid impact and rolled his rig onto its side in the grassy median.

"This tractor trailer might have hit her head on, which would have been real bad for everybody involved," Muhlenberg police Sgt. Joel Marino told 69 News that day.

The crash caused the truck, which was traveling from Allentown to Birdsboro, to spill part of its load of trash in the northbound lanes, forcing the need to close the highway in both directions.

The truck's driver suffered only minor injuries in the accident.

Hockenberry, police said, managed to get all the way to the area of the Walmart on Allentown Pike in Muhlenberg Township before she was stopped by an officer.
