Police ID man killed in crash on Interstate 176 in Cumru

Victim Douglas Looney, 59, of Newport, Washington

CUMRU TWP., Pa. - Authorities have identified the man who died in a crash that closed Interstate 176 in Berks County for nearly eight hours Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Douglas Looney was traveling north on I-176 in Cumru Township when the four-vehicle accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, police said.

"It appears that the pickup truck was struck from behind, causing it to cross the median into the southbound lanes and then strike another passenger vehicle, which in turn struck the tractor trailer," said Chief Madison Winchester, Cumru Township Police Department.

Looney, 59, of Newport, Washington, died at the scene, police said.

"He is an individual that is out of state," Winchester said. "We believe he was here on business."

Four people in the other vehicles were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

"We do believe that speed was a factor in this accident," Winchester told 69 News.

Interstate 176 was closed in both directions until shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday.
