Police ID suspect in killing of man outside bar

READING, Pa. - Police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a suspect in the deadly shooting of a man outside a bar last weekend.

Jose Reyes-Diaz is being sought on charges of first and third degree murder and related offenses.

Police said Reyes-Diaz, 24, shot Ramon Rosario-Evangelista and two other people outside the A-Town Cafe in the 900 block of Elm St. in Reading last Sunday, Nov. 13.

Rosario-Evangelista, a student at the I-LEAD charter school in Reading, died at the scene of a gunshot wound to his head, police said.

"He was out like many people were out that night," said Angel Figueroa, a friend. "And he went out because Ramon, like many, couldn't afford to pay HBO to watch the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight."

The other two victims were transported to a hospital for treatment. One was still listed in serious condition on Monday, police said.

"Ramon, being who he is, he saw something had happened and asked if he could help in some way," said Figueroa. "Next thing you know, shots went flaring. He became the casualty of those gunshots."

Rosario-Evangelista was a GED student, who was seen in a video giving a lesson to his fellow classmates.

"And it demonstrated who he was and what he was going to become had his life not been taken away," said Figueroa.

Figueroa said Rosario-Evangelista will be missed at the I-LEAD school.

Reading police said they've been working hard for a week trying to identify a suspect in the killing.

"It just took days and days and finally came up with a possible name," said Insp. Fran Drexler, Reading Police Dept. "And then we put photo lineups together and positively identified him."

Drexler said Reyes-Diaz has distinctive tattoos on his shoulder and arm.

"We certainly consider him extremely dangerous at this point, shooting three people, basically the victim in cold blood," said Drexler. "We are really going to make every effort to get him off the streets."

Figueroa wants Reyes-Diaz to be caught, too.

"To bring Ramon's mother some sort of closure, some sort of peace, letting her know that justice is working and that justice will be on our side," said Figueroa.

Anyone with information about Reyes-Diaz's whereabouts can call Crime Alert Berks County toll-free at 877-373-9913. Callers who provide information that leads to an arrest could receive a cash reward of up to $10,000.
