Police: man admits to bank robberies in Berks County

CUMRU TWP., Pa. - Police may have cracked the case in a rash of bank robberies throughout Berks County that have terrorized bank employees and customers.

Several tip calls to Crime Alert Berks County led police to Harvey Avenue and Bingaman Street in Exeter Township on Thursday afternoon, investigators said.

That's where police cornered Anthony Lena, 28, from the 2600 block of Perkiomen Avenue in neighboring Mount Penn.

Inside Lena's vehicle, police said they recovered money stolen from the Visions Federal Credit Union, 600 E. Lancaster Ave., in Cumru Township.

The credit union was robbed earlier in the afternoon, and Lena matched the description of the man who committed the robbery, police said.

Lena also matched the description of the man wanted in connection with a string of bank robberies throughout Berks County, starting in early February, authorities said.

After police took Lena into custody, he was interrogated and later admitted to some of the crimes, police said.
