Police: Mark Shirey repeatedly terrorized ex-girlfriend, her mother

Women tell 69 News they fellt like hostages in their own home

Women: 'He held us hostage for almost a year-and-a-half'

EXETER TWP., Pa. - A man is behind bars for terrorizing his former girlfriend and her mother for the last year-and-a-half, police said.

Mark Shirey was arrested and charged Thursday with assault, terroristic threats, theft among other offenses.

Shirey, 37, threatened Tammy Baker and her mother, Marion Gilligan, almost daily, according to court documents.

On many occasions, Shirey allegedly took a butcher knife and held it to Baker's throat, demanded money and said he would cut her throat when she went to sleep. She would comply out of fear for her life, said police.

Baker, 35, and Shirey dated, and he lived with both women in the 1200 block of Hollywood Drive in Exeter Twp., Berks Co.

Shirey shot BB rifles inside the house, and shot a hole through a Polaroid photograph of Gilligan, 75, to terrorize her, said police.

When Shirey moved into the home, he would take Gilligan to stores and to her doctor's appointments, said both women.

Then, they said, something snapped and he turned violent.

"He held us hostage for like almost a year-and-a-half," said Gilligan, who relies on a wheelchair to get around. Baker also has some physical disabilities.

Shirey is being held in the Berks County Jail on $40,000 bail.
