Police: Man admits to robbing banks in Berks, Bucks counties

Suspect also charged in 2 attempted holdups

HILLTOWN TWP., Pa. - Police have apprehended a man accused of robbing banks in Berks and Bucks counties.

Manuel Montenegro's arrest Tuesday evening came just hours after he attempted to rob the Citizens Bank on Route 113 in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, police said.

Montenegro, wearing a black shoe polish-like substance on his face and hands, was escorted from the bank by a security officer before he could get any cash, police said.

During questioning by investigators, Montenegro confessed to hitting up the same bank the day before, however, the bank was already closed for the day.

Montenegro was successful in robbing the bank on September 18, when he also wore the black substance on his face, police said.

The Warrington man also admitted to robbing the VIST Bank on Rockland Street, near Albright College, in Reading on September 22.

A teller handed him a red dye pack that contained pepper spray, according to police, who said they believe the pack exploded in his car as he drove away. The suspect was seen on surveillance images throwing the bag out of the car's window on Rockland Street, police said.

Montenegro, 26, was charged with robbery, attempted robbery, theft, and related offenses. He was committed to the Bucks County Correctional Facility on $100,000 bail.
