READING, Pa. - Police are hoping someone can help them identify the man who robbed a store in downtown Reading at gunpoint.
Police released surveillance pictures Tuesday of the holdup inside the Reading Adult Outlet in the 300 block of Penn Street on Dec. 26.
Officers initially responded to a panic alarm at the store at 4:29 a.m. Once on scene, they learned that a man armed with a gun made off with cash from the register.
The store clerk told police the man, wearing a blue jacket with a hood over his head, made a purchase and then went to the rear of the store before returning to the counter with a long barrel silver revolver in his hand, police said.
The robber, after telling the clerk to open the register drawer, hopped onto the counter, grabbed cash out of the till and then fled out the front door, police said.
A taxi driver later told investigators that he was dispatched to pick up a man matching the robber's description by the CVS store at South 6th and Penn streets, said police, adding that the man told the driver he wanted to go to the Walmart in Temple but first wanted to stop at the adult store to get cigarettes.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
