Pregnant woman, 2 children die in house fire in Hamburg

Man escaped burning home by jumping from window

HAMBURG, Pa. - A pregnant mother and her two young children died in a fast-moving house fire in Berks County late Saturday night.

The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. in the 400 block of South Fourth Street in Hamburg and quickly consumed the home, trapping a pregnant woman and two children inside.

Firefighters later found the bodies of the woman and her sons, ages two and five, on the second floor of the home, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

A fourth victim was transported to Reading Hospital and then transferred to the burn center at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown. Officials said the man jumped from a bedroom window to escape the flames.

Two dogs also died in the fire.

A state police fire marshal is working to determine the cause.
