Program aimed at reducing drug abuse in Berks expands

A program aimed at reducing prescription drug abuse in Berks County is expanding.

Prescription drug collection boxes are now at police stations in Wyomissing, West Reading, Shillington and Bally.

This means there are nearly two dozen boxes across Berks County where you can safely dispose of unused or unwanted medicine.

"Frankly it's a win-win situation because we're seeing today a direct correlation between the abuse of prescription drugs and the drug problem we have in our county," said District Attorney John Adams.

The first drug disposal boxes in Berks were installed last March.

In the first six months, officials said they collected nearly 1,200 pounds of medicine.
