Public forum set on possible Antietam-Exeter schools merger

EXETER TWP., Pa. - The often on again, off again talk about merging two school districts in Berks County is back on.

The Exeter Township School District announced plans Wednesday for a community forum about a possible merger with the neighboring Antietam School District.

The Exeter School Board will present the "Antietam-Exeter Merger and Shared Services" study information. The board will also invite comments and questions about the study from residents.

The forum is scheduled for Tues., April 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Reiffton School, 4355 Dunham Dr.

The Exeter Township School District, which is made up of the township and neighboring Saint Lawrence borough, has an 2012-2013 enrollment of 4,165 students, according to the Berks County Intermediate Unit. It has six school buildings.

TheĀ Antietam School District, which is comprised of Mount Penn and Lower Alsace Township, has a 2012-2013 enrollment of 1,058 students, making it the smallest district in Berks County. It has three school buildings.

The two districts have discussed the possibility of merging a number of times over the past several decades.
