Historic building starts to crumble

READING, Pa. - At least 12 people are without a home Friday after their building partially collapsed late Thursday night.

Reading Police were called to a building at Fifth and Cherry streets for a partial building collapse around 11:30 p.m.

A substantial hole opened up in the front of the structure where an awning used to be at 34 and 36 South Fifth Street.

Police said the building shifted a little when crews were at the scene, but it appears to be stable.

Building inspectors and engineers were at the scene assessing the damage throughout the night.

The water and electric meters were turned off, and crews are working at the scene Friday morning.

The building houses a business on the first floor, storage on the second floor front, and there's an apartment in the rear of the second floor. There are two more apartments on the third floor.

The Red Cross is assisting the people who are displaced.
Luckily.. no one was injured.
WFMZ's Melanie Falcon is headed to the scene.. she will join us in our later half hours with more information.
