Ceremony commemorates USS Maine sinking

READING, Pa. - A special ceremony in Berks County commemorated the 120th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Maine battleship.

The ceremony was held Saturday morning at the Maine Anchor Memorial in Reading's City Park.

The USS Maine sunk off the coast of Cuba on February 15, 1898, following a massive explosion. More than 260 of the 400 American crew members on board, including a seaman from Reading, died.

To this day, it remains unclear what exactly happened to the Maine, but the incident was a significant factor in the United States entering the Spanish-American War.
