Store, in business since 1979, to close in July

Reading China and Glass at VF Outlet...

WEST READING, Pa. - A popular retail store in Berks County will soon be closing its doors after 38 years in business.

Reading China and Glass announced Thursday that it will be closing its store at the Vanity Fair Outlet Center in West Reading this summer.

Customers said they are disappointed.

"I will miss it," said Pat Kalnoski.

"This is the store that kept mostly everything alive," said Amaryllis Roman. "Everybody comes here for their stuff."

The store's owner, Eric Brinsfield, cited the retail center's recent sale to a Philadelphia developer and its transformation into a mixed-use complex of office, retail, and restaurant space as a factor in his decision to close.

"The redevelopment project has a lot of moving pieces," Brinsfield said. "We understood that it would be a challenge to accommodate our large store in development plans. As difficult as it is, it seemed it was time for us to move on."

The store's marketing manager, Steph Graves, told 69 News that the store will have discounts beginning Friday and lasting six to eight weeks. The store is expected to close by mid-July.

"We really want to thank the folks of Berks County and beyond for all of the great years that we had in West Reading," Brinsfield said. "We will be offering some incredible values for folks as we wind down the store, beginning on May 5."

The store has nearly 30 employees. Their fate is uncertain now, but there's still a chance they could find a new job within the company.

"Some of those folks may be working for us at Lancaster or maybe at a potential distribution center in this area," said store manager Kerry Linton.

Bud and Aggie Jansen founded Reading China and Glass in 1979. It specialized in china and glass sourced from around the world. The "Reading China" backstamp on dinnerware is still known nationally, Brinsfield said.

The Reading China & Glass store at the Rockvale Outlets in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, will remain open.
