Reading DoubleTree GM receives global honor

READING, Pa. - There was a chance Craig Poole would not have come to Reading to become the general manager of the DoubleTree Hotel. He said, at one point, he turned down an offer from Walt Disney World near Orlando, but if he had accepted that job, he wouldn't have been honored with the Hilton Light and Warmth award.

"I'm very overwhelmed," said Poole. "I'm very thankful that I get something this big."

The award was a surprise. He walked into the amphitheater of the hotel in downtown Reading to see dozens of his friends and coworkers. Poole humbly accepted the award and a $10,000 check.

It's a prestigious award in the hospitality business; Hilton said only 12 of its employees around the world have received it in the past year. Poole is passing along the credit.

"I have 200 and some-odd people who work here, and they made this happen," said Poole.

In his career, he's also passed along the good, as he said, with volunteer work, community development, and being a mentor to so many, particularly his employees.

But even he has a mentor, one who could not be there was Al Boscov, who passed away earlier this month.

"I wish he could be here. I wish in all my heart that Mr. Boscov was standing here right now. He'd be hugging me," Poole said.
