READING, Pa. - The future stars of the Philadelphia Phillies took to the field Tuesday night for a preseason showdown featuring the Reading Fightin Phils and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Crews spent all morning Tuesday prepping the field at FirstEnergy Stadium for the 7th annual 222 Showcase.
"You can kind of feel the excitement today. They are getting the hot dog stands ready, mowing the lawn. It is that time of the year. Personally, I am ready for baseball to start," said Eric Scarcella, the Fightins director of media relations.
Proceeds of ticket sales to the exhibition game go to Baseballtown Charities, which helps with projects like last year's renovation of Baer Park in Reading.
"We refurbished the benches. We refurbished the field. Our team helped renovate and clean up the field last summer, so it has really been a labor of love for baseball fans," said Scarcella.
The team will also be signing autographs before the game. Fans said they are excited for another season of baseball in Baseballtown.
"It is awesome family fun. We have such a great time. My 4-year-old loves all the things in between. You cannot beat the price," said fan Amber Herb.
All the extra snow this season posed challenges for the team, but crews worked around the clock to get the field ready for the game.
