Reading Fightin Phils set to dedicate Baer Park following team's renovation

READING, Pa. - A once-blighted park in northwest Reading has become a field of dreams for the neighborhood's aspiring young baseball players.

Those dreams will come true Saturday when the Reading Fightin Phils and Baseballtown Charities dedicate the newly renovated Baer Park during a ceremony set to start at 11:30 a.m.

The team and its charitable organization raised the money needed to install fencing, renovate the field and replace the bleachers.

The project was the first among several fields identified by Baseballtown Charities and the Reading Parks and Recreation Commission as in dire need of being rehabilitated.

The event on Saturday will also double as Reading's Aquafina Pitch, Hit, and Run contest, which will feature youth baseball players competing in hopes of making it to Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in July.
