READING, Pa. - A Reading man was jailed Monday on charges of first- and third-degree murder in the fatal shooting of another man over the weekend.

The suspect, Michael Anjelo Maldonado-Caballero, shot Douglas Hanson Thorton Jr. in the 100 block of South Sixth Street late Saturday night, police said.

Thorton, 37, died Sunday morning at Reading Hospital of a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Thorton and Maldonado-Caballero, 22, were arguing when Caballero pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at Thorton, police said.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams credited eyewitnesses for helping to catch Maldonado-Caballero, who was apprehended by RPD officers Sunday morning.

In addition to the two counts of murder, he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. A preliminary hearing is set for January 8.
