Reading man dragged into home, beaten with baseball bat

READING, Pa. - The beating of a man inside a home in Reading has led to charges against both the suspect and the victim.

Police were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday to the 300 block of West Buttonwood Street for the report of a fight involving juveniles dragging another into a home.

Officers knocked on the door of a home and were greeted by a woman, later identified as Laquasia Avery. They then found a man, identified as Benjamin Tomoney, standing over another man, identified as Yuma White, who was moaning on the floor in pain, according to court documents.

Tomoney yelled at officers that they needed a warrant to be inside the house, and a struggle ensued, prompting the need for several officers to detain him, police said.

Both Tomoney and one of the officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle.

In the meantime, an officer tending to White found a small bag of marijuana in one of his pockets, according to court documents.

Avery told investigators that White threatened her with a baseball bat, said police, who added that they learned White later called Avery's father from the hospital and threatened to shoot him.

White, 18, was charged with terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another, possession of marijuana, harassment and simple assault. He remains hospitalized.

Tomoney, 21, was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Avery, 23, was charged with obstruction. She was committed to the Berks County Jail on $10,000 bail.
