Reading man sentenced for international gun shipment

Rafael Cabrera-Mesa also stole dead person's identity, officials say

PHILADELPHIA - A Reading man has been ordered to serve five years in prison for shipping a gun and ammunition out of the country and stealing a dead person's identity.

Cabrera-Mesa, 36, shipped to the Dominican Republic a Remington Model 760 Gamemaster .30?06 rifle, along with numerous rounds of ammunition, in February 2010, officials said.

Cabrera-Mesa also stole the identity of a deceased American citizen, using that person's birth certificate and social security number in order to avoid apprehension by immigration authorities, officials said.

Rafael Cabrera-Mesa pleaded guilty to the charges in December.

In addition to the prison sentence imposed by a federal judge Wednesday, Cabrera-Mesa was also ordered to serve three years on supervised release.
