Reading man steals syringes, injects heroin inside pharmacy, police say

READING, Pa. - A Reading man was jailed Monday for allegedly using a package of syringes he didn't pay for to inject himself with heroin inside a pharmacy in center city.

James Roberts walked into the Rite Aid pharmacy, 418 Penn St., around  2:40 p.m. Friday and asked a store employee for a package of syringes, police said.

Roberts then told the employee she can call the police because he was not paying for the package, which he opened.

The employee then watched Roberts sit down on a chair and proceed to mix two packets of heroin with water he had taken from the front of the store and inject the drug into his arm, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Roberts then sat there and waited for officers to arrive.

Roberts, 38, was charged with use/possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct, retail theft and related offenses. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $20,000 bail.
