Reading mayor announces nominee for city fire chief

Nick Wooten must be confirmed by city council

Reading mayor announces nominee for city fire chief

READING, Pa. - Reading's mayor has selected the man he wants to become the city's next fire chief.

Mayor Vaughn Spencer announced Tuesday that Nick Wooten is his nominee for the position.

Wooten currently serves as the battalion chief of operations for the fire department in Hampton, Virginia.

Spencer said Wooten's bachelor of science degree in emergency medical services management will aide the further development of Reading's rapidly growing demand for emergency medical services.

"Nick Wooten offers the right combination [of] skills and experience to help grow our department and protect the public," Spencer said. "I see a real opportunity to also bring further diversity into our leadership team."

If approved by city council, Wooten would become the first African American fire chief in Reading's history.

Council interviewed Wooten on April 29, said Spencer, adding that he'll ask members to vote to confirm him this month.

Wooten would replace Gary Mogel, who has been serving as acting chief since the sudden departure of David Hollinger from the post last year.
