Reading police: Copper thief causes $80K in damage to school, apartments

READING, Pa. - Reading police are trying to track down the person responsible for causing $80,000 in damage to a school and apartment complex while stealing copper from air conditioning units.

Police said the thief struck two times each at Northeast Middle School in the 1200 block of North 13th Street on June 25-26, and at the the Silk Mill Apartments in the 1200 block of North 11th Street on June 23 and 30.

The thief destroyed the air conditioning units while removing the copper, causing $80,000 in damage, according to police.

At this point, police say the the only image of the suspect available for public review is a poor quality still shot from a surveillance camera.

Police describe the suspect as a white or Hispanic male between the ages of 18 and 25. Police said he was riding a bicycle in all of the offenses.
