Police issue warning after robberies in Reading

READING, Pa. - A would-be purse-snatcher met his match in Reading overnight.

A Leesport woman was sitting in her car at 11th and Oley streets around 12:35 a.m. Tuesday when a man jumped on the hood and tried to reach through the sunroof of the car to steal her purse, police said.

The 32-year-old woman fought back and the man fled empty-handed, police said.

Approximately 20 minutes earlier, police said a Reading woman was walking in the area of Plum and Chestnut streets when a man struck her from behind, knocked her to the ground and stole about $40 she had in her possession.

The 23-year-old woman did not require hospitalization.

The Hispanic man who attacked her was described as being approximately 20-years-old with a heavyset build and an "afro" hairstyle.

Anyone with information about either robbery is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. A cash reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
