Reading Police: Man shot and killed early Monday

Man shot and killed in Reading

READING, Pa. - Reading police are searching for a killer after a shooting that left one man dead and another hurt.

Police said an altercation between three men turned deadly in the parking lot located next to the Jet Set Restaurant on South Ninth Street around 2:00 a.m. Monday.

"There was an altercation inside the Jet Set which ultimately moved its way to the parking lot. A male produced a firearm and discharged striking two people, killing one of them," said Captain Damond Kloc.

Kloc said Jose Rivera, 27, was shot in the chest and died at Reading Hospital.

The other victim, Kloc said, was shot in the arm and treated and released from the hospital.

Witness Junior Oriol told 69 News that neighbors are fearful for what they are seeing in their neighborhood.

"Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday nights, just sit here and see how these people come out here at night. It's like mass hysteria," said Oriol.

For 20 years, Oriol said he has lived along the 100 block of South Ninth Street in Reading. He claims ever since this neighborhood restaurant obtained a liquor license, it has brought about even more disturbance in the neighborhood.

"The parties that go on in there are not family-oriented parties," said Oriol. "I heard eight gunshots and then like three or four more. So I quickly jumped up and I looked outside the window, seeing people running."

Police have examined an SUV that was riddled with bullets. Kloc stated that the vehicle is in police custody.

"We are downloading videos from all over the city in hopes to assist us," said Kloc.

Police are still investigating what the motive was behind this shooting.
