Reading police say Pear Street shooting now a homicide

READING, Pa. - Police said they are now investigating the shooting of a man in Reading as a homicide.

RPD officers responded shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday to the 200 block of Pear Street for the report of several shots fired.

A 24-year-old man suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper body, according to police. The victim, whose name has not been released, was rushed to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, where he died about three hours later.

A neighbor reported hearing seven or eight gunshots.

Police said the Pear Street shooting was not related to a second shooting reported later in Wednesday night.

In that shooting, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg somewhere near the McDonald's restaurant at North Ninth and Spring streets. The victim managed to make his way to the 200 block of Walnut Street, more than a mile away from the McDonald's.

Police said they were able to get "limited information" from the teen.

No arrest has been made in either shooting. Anyone with information can contact Crime Alert Berks County via anonymous text to 847411, starting the message with keyword alertberks, or by calling 877-373-9913.
