Reading postpones opening of city-owned swimming pool

Schlegel Park Pool to open at noon on June 3

READING, Pa. - It's a good thing high heat and humidity aren't in the forecast for the first week of the traditional summer season.

That's because "unforeseen maintenance issues" with the Schlegel Park Pool in southwest Reading have forced city officials to postpone the pool's opening from Memorial Day weekend until next weekend.

The pool, the only one owned by the city, is now scheduled to open at noon on Saturday, June 3.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy Memorial Day holiday," the Reading Recreation Commission posted on its website.

While officials didn't release specifics about the nature of the current maintenance issues, they don't appear to be as bad as the problems the city encountered with the pool in 2014, when tile damage and cracks delayed its opening by nearly a month.

Officials blamed those problems on a harsh winter.

The city has been criticized for not having enough public pools, with Schlegel Park often being filled to capacity on hot summer days.

Last summer, it reopened a spray park at the 11th and Pike playground in an effort to help city residents beat the heat.

The city also approved the purchase of the former East Reading Pool site. Mayor Wally Scott has said he hopes to open a public splash park there, but formal plans for the property have not been announced.
