Reading residents urged to apply for free smoke detectors

READING, Pa. - Reading's fire marshal is reminding all residents of the importance of having working smoke detectors inside their homes.

Those who don't are urged to apply for a city program that provides homeowners with free smoke detectors and installation.

"The sooner you hear a smoke detector, the more time you will have to get out," said Larry Moyer, Reading's fire marshal. "Our mission is to get as many working smoke detectors in homes as possible. This program helps us do that and we hope that homeowners apply. It can save their family's lives."

Interested homeowners can get more information or apply for the program by contacting Reading's citizen service center at 877-727-3234.

The smoke detectors will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until the city's supply is depleted, Moyer said.
