Reading School Board hires new superintendent with unanimous vote

READING, Pa. - The Reading School Board has made it official.

In a special meeting late Monday afternoon, the board gave unanimous approval to hire Khalid Mumin as the district's new superintendent.

Mumin, a Philadelphia native, has been the superintendent of Caroline County Public Schools in Maryland since 2011.  

Mumin replaces Carlinda Purcell, who was fired in November.

Board members said she failed to submit a balanced budget in a timely manner and to visit the district's schools regularly.

Mumin will have the title of "acting superintendent" until procedural errors surrounding Purcell's termination can be resolved, officials said.
