Reading's 10th and Green school one step closer to modular

READING, Pa. - It's exactly the outcome that Marcos Soler, who has a first-grader and second-grader at 10th and Green Elementary School in Reading has been waiting for.

"I saw the blueprints for the new modular. It's a good and nice project," Soler said.

At the start of the school year, parents took pictures that showed 50 students in a kindergarten classroom, highlighting overcrowding concerns.

Initial confusion between the city's planning commission and developers over those blueprints got cleared up, moving the Reading School District closer to providing more space for students.

"Some clarifications were provided and some additional drawings that they asked for were provided," explained Chris Celmer, assistant superintendent for Reading School District.

From the removal of five previous modules to the planned placement of one large modular building, commissioners, school officials and developers are all in search of the same thing.

"There's a lot of history with the Reading School District, and some of those issues were ironed out tonight," Celmer said.

The commission granted a waiver to allow the district to skip remaining approvals that a typical building would need, and move on to the next phase of the project.

"Our next step is once we gain approval from the Reading School District saying we're ready to go, we will mobilize our team and start with the installation of the modular building," said Ed Craig, the general manager for Vanguard Modular Building Systems.

They'll need to meet with Reading Area Water Authority to complete plans to get water for the bathrooms and the sprinkler system.

Celmer said he hopes to have the facility up and running before Thanksgiving.

"We told the parents that we're hopeful that by November they'd be ready to go," he said.
