Reading shooting suspect apprehended, jailed on $1M bail

Tai-Mare Mercado charged with attempted homicide

READING, Pa. - The search is over for the suspect in the shooting of a man and subsequent carjacking of a motorist in Reading.

Tai-Mare Mercado has been apprehended on charges that include attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, recklessly endangering another person, and receiving stolen property.

Mercado had been sought since August 4, when police identified him as the person who opened fire in the area of North Front and Greenwich street the day before, wounding another man multiple times.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

In his attempt to get away, Mercado crashed his SUV in the 1700 block of Rose Street and then forced a motorist in another car to drive him to the Oakbrook area of the city, police said.

Mercado is now in the Berks County Jail on $1 million bail.

Mercado has a lengthy criminal history in Berks County, dating back to 2010, according to court records.

He was arrested in Florida in 2016 on charges of robbing another man at a motel in Muhlenberg Township and threatening the man's family.
