'popUP Library' on Penn Street, branches to help meet demand during closure

Reading's main library to close for extensive facelift

READING, Pa. - Reading's main library is about to close for at least two months while the 100-year-old building undergoes an extensive facelift, library officials announced Wednesday.

The library at South 5th and Franklin streets in center city will close its doors on Thurs., Aug. 22.

"Reading Public Library is excited for the main library to get a much needed update," said Frank Kasprowicz, library director. "Our biggest concern was ensuring that our patrons still had access to library services during the renovation period."

The renovations will include a fresh coat of paint on the walls, repaired plaster, new carpeting and a newly designed and enhanced children's department.

To meet the demand for free library services while the work is being done, the library will open a "popUP Library" at 645 Penn St., Suite 101, on Tues., Sept. 3.

The temporary site, which will contain highly circulated materials and computers, will have the same hours as the main library, which are Monday through Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.; Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Hours at the city's three branch libraries will also be extended as follows, starting Sept. 3:

Southeast Branch: Open Mondays from noon until 7:30 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Northeast Branch: Mondays from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Wednesdays from noon until 7:30 p.m; Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Northwest Branch: Tuesdays from noon until 7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
