Restaurant joins efforts to help...

WYOMISSING, Pa. - For Hamid Chaudhry, the owner of Wyomissing Restaurant & Bakery, a hurricane didn't just hit Puerto Rico, It hit him, too.

"This is too personal for me," he shared, as staff prepared behind him for a fundraising dinner to help with hurricane relief.

It's personal because of the people he's come to know in Reading.

"A lot of my colleagues have been a lot of Puerto Ricans and a lot of customers, Puerto Ricans," Chaudry explained, "and for the first time, I have an opportunity to give back."

Give back to help the Puerto Rican community and indirectly help employees like Danielle Pyle.

"Everybody was very concerned not being able to hear from their family for who knows how long," Pyle said.

For many Reading residents who have family so far away, these events serve as a source of strength.

"We come from all different walks of life, whether it's Puerto Rican, Dominican, whatever descent it is, but at the same time we always come together," said Pyle.

This "coming together" has been seen across Berks County, with numerous fundraisers having already taken place and ongoing drives to help Puerto Rico recover.

"What I like is people are talking about Puerto Rico, not like it's some far off island, but that it's part of the United States," said Reading Mayor Wally Scott. "I think it's really great."

Pyle is happy to see various organizations across the city trying to help.

"This is huge for our community to help and to be able to give back," she said.
