HAMBURG, Pa. - A judge has ordered a man to stand trial in the theft of thousands of dollars from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Hamburg.
Richard Spatz appeared in court Monday for his preliminary hearing on charges that include theft and receiving stolen property.
Spatz, 51, was serving as treasurer of VFW Post 216 when he used the post's ATM card to steal $14,392 between July 2012 and May 2013, according to police records.
"We were devastated. We put our trust in this guy, a fellow vet," Dennis Carter, the post's commander, told 69 News in an interview last week.
Spatz, police said, also used the post's credit card to rent a small chipper for his tree service business.
Spatz remains free on $50,000 bail. He's due back in court for a formal arraignment on July 28.
