Route 183 bridge replacement project to cause delays

UPPER TULPEHOCKEN TWP., Pa. - Get ready for delays and detours at the interchange of Interstate 78 and Route 183 in Berks County.

PennDOT has begun work to replace the Route 183 bridge over I-78 in Upper Tulpehocken Township. The work is part of a major PennDOT project to replace six outdated bridges in the county.

"The old bridges were too low. They were getting hit quite frequently. They don't meet the criteria for what we call under-clearance," said Ron Young, a PennDOT spokesman.

The Route 183 bridge will be closed through October 14. For the first three nights of construction, I-78 near the bridge will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday.

"You're going to have traffic getting off at Exit 19, which is Route 183, going up the ramps and getting back on I-78 on the on-ramps," Young explained.

After that portion of the project is complete, PennDOT will close the I-78 West and East on- and off-ramps at Route 183 for about 15 days at a time.

Officials said they are doing everything possible to expedite the construction process.
