Route 61 reopens

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - A busy stretch of Route 61 in Muhlenberg Township reopened Monday afternoon.

The road was shut down near Wawa, between Reading Crest Avenue and Witman Road, after a 36 inch water main ruptured last Tuesday morning.

There was a detour between Tuckerton Road and Bellevue Avenue, but it became a nightmare for drivers.

"Route 222 started getting backed up a lot, 5th street was getting backed up a lot. It was kind of hard trying to get through here with the road closure. I had to weave in and out through streets on the way home," said Jacob Leininger, who lives in Muhlenberg Township.

Although only a small stretch of road was closed, it was a headache for drivers to navigate around.

"Wherever we go we use this a lot. I mean, it is a main artery and I live between 61 and 222 so I am always using those two roads," said Hazel Johnson, who lives in Muhlenberg Township.

The road was closed for almost a week, not because it took that long to replace the water main, but because it took that long to repair the road.

"It is inconvenient for a day or two longer, but as I say, you would rather have it done once, done right and not come back and tie it up again," said Johnson.

After almost a week out of commission, crews reopened Route 61 around 3 p.m. Monday.

"I just happened to have to go to the car dealer this morning, it was closed. We went to pick the car up and happy it is open," said Ed Parlock, who lives in Reading.

"It is nice to have it back open," said Leininger.

No one was without water during the water main break.
