OLEY TWP., Pa. - Summer vacation is in full swing, but parents and students in the Oley Valley School District just hit a roadblock on the way to summer fun.
Parents were notified on Thursday that the start of school is being pushed up.
"It is just a shock, too much of a shock. It is ridiculous," said Angie Knarr, parent.
"I was upset because I knew it was going to affect my son and I did not know what to do," said Jennifer McMullen, parent.
Jennifer McMullen is one of the many parents upset by the school board's decision. She already had a vacation planned for her 10-year-old son.
"There are people that put out thousands of dollars for vacations based on a calendar that was given to them and I know things change, but once summer starts and the summer vacation starts, I think that is truly unfair," said McMullen.
Parents say moving the start date from August 25th to the 20th is upsetting because now some of their kids are going to miss the first three days of school.
"My son of all the children, he does not miss a lot of school at all. So he is upset. But then, he does not want to miss his vacation either and I do not blame him," said McMullen.
The school district told parents that they need to submit an educational trip request form if their children need to miss the first three days of school.
We reached out to the school district but have not yet received a response.
