Search for Berks woman, 2 kids to be featured on national TV

'You just have to tell us where this woman is'

The ongoing search for a woman who fled Berks County with her two sons during a custody battle nearly three years ago is being thrust into the national spotlight.

CNN is highlighting the case of Maria Evelia Cabrera-Gutierrez on its series, "The Hunt with John Walsh," which airs at 8 p.m. Sunday on the network's HLN channel.

Cabrera-Gutierrez left her apartment on Oley Turnpike Road in St. Lawrence with her then-2-year-old son, Daniel Markus, and her older son, Ivan Mendez, and boarded a bus from Reading to San Antonio, Texas, according to the Central Berks Regional Police Department.

At the time, she was in the midst of a custody battle over Daniel with the boy's father, Guy Markus, who discovered the disappearance on November 14, 2014, when he went to pick up his son for the weekend. All he found, police said, was a note on the door that read, "When I get legal help, I will contact you."

Cabrera-Gutierrez was subsequently charged with interference with custody of children and concealment of whereabouts of a child in Daniel's alleged abduction. Custody of her older son was not being disputed.

Days later, a federal warrant for her arrest was issued on a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. She is now considered one of the FBI's most-wanted.

Police said they determined that, once in Texas, Cabrera-Gutierrez and her sons were picked up by a nephew, who was unaware of the crime she was committing. He then took them to Austin, Texas, where they are believed to have stayed in a shelter.

Cabrera-Gutierrez, who is of Mexican descent, was initially believed to have been trying to flee across the border into Mexico, according to police, who noted that she also has family in California, as well as Texas.

"You just have to tell us where this woman is," said Walsh, whose own son, Adam, was abducted and murdered in Hollywood, Florida, in 1981. "Please do it for the safety of these little boys. They are in serious danger."

Cabrera-Gutierrez, 46, is described as standing five feet, four inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Daniel, now 4 years old, also has brown hair and brown eyes. A photo, provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, shows him age-progressed to 5 years old.

"I just hope he's OK. I hope he's safe. I hope he's being treated well," the boy's father told WFMZ's Maria Salazar during an emotional interview last year.

Anyone with information regarding there whereabouts can contact Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers at 800-4PA-TIPS or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 800-843-5678 (800-THE-LOST).
